Branching: How to screen participants and send them to different survey questions

Branching allows you to create unique paths through your survey depending on how participants answer specific questions. A common use for branching is to screen out non-relevant participants (sending them to the survey "Finish Page", as in the example below).

There are two ways that branching appears in OpinionX:

  1. Answer Branching: in Multiple Choice blocks, allows you to send participants to different blocks based on their answer.

  2. Survey Branching: on all other blocks, allows you to specify which block a participant is sent to once they finish that question (example below).

Another way to think about it is that Answer Branching opens a new branch and Survey Branching closes that branch by bringing participants back to a shared point in the main survey flow. Here's an example map of a branched survey:

What's the difference between Segmentation and Branching?

Segmentation allows you to compare how different subgroups of participants voted on the same question. If you have a ranking question that is only relevant for specific participants, making everyone answer it is a poor survey experience for your respondents (for example, asking Free tier users to rank a list of premium features they have never used before).
