CNAME: Set a custom domain for your OpinionX surveys

Run your OpinionX surveys on your own branded subdomain, eg. surveys.yourbrand.com, so participants only ever interact with your brand.

Custom Domains are a premium add-on available to OpinionX customers on the Accelerate tier. This isn't a self-serve feature, we set it up for you directly. Reach out to your dedicated account manager or book a call to get started.

What a Custom Domain gives you

By default, your OpinionX survey participation links look something like app.opinionx.co/[survey-id]. That's fine for internal research or one-off studies, but if you're running participant-facing surveys regularly as part of your product research , customer studies, or for client work at an agency, then you probably want your surveys to live on your own branded URL instead.

With a Custom Domain, your survey participation links look like surveys.yourbrand.com/[survey-id] (you get to choose whatever subdomain you want). Participants never see the opinionx.co URL at any point during the voting experience. Combined with our other workspace whitelabeling features — like custom favicon, default brand theme for surveys, hiding the Powered by OpinionX footer — this makes your surveys feel completely native to your brand.

What stays on OpinionX

Your OpinionX dashboard for building surveys, analyzing results, managing your workspace, and everything else on the researcher side of the platform still lives at app.opinionx.co. The Custom Domain only affects what survey participants see when they open your survey link — everything you and your team do inside OpinionX is unchanged.

How the setup works

Setting up a Custom Domain takes between a few hours up to a few days at most. Generally we can turn around CNAME setup with you within the same week. The process is as follows:

  1. Tell us the subdomain you want to use. Something like surveys.acme.com, research.yourbrand.com, poll.domain.com — whatever fits your brand, it just needs to be a subdomain on a domain you own.

  2. We send you a CNAME record to add to your DNS. A CNAME record is a small piece of configuration on your domain's DNS settings that points your chosen subdomain at OpinionX's infrastructure. Your IT team or whoever manages your DNS (Cloudflare, GoDaddy, Route 53, wherever your domain lives) will know exactly what to do with what we send you.

  3. DNS propagation happens. Once the CNAME record is added, it typically takes up to a few hours to propagate globally.

  4. We provision your SSL certificate automatically. This means your custom URL will load securely as https://surveys.yourbrand.com from day one, with no additional setup on your side. You don't need to buy a certificate, upload anything, or renew anything. We handle it end-to-end.

  5. You're live. All new surveys created in your workspace will use your custom domain automatically.

That's it! Once it's set up, nothing changes about how you build or analyze surveys, the only difference is the URL your participants see.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be technical to use this? No, you just need to be able to loop in whoever manages your company's DNS (usually IT, or sometimes marketing if they handle your website). We do all the OpinionX-side setup, and the DNS side is a single record they'll add in a few minutes.

Can I use my root domain, like yourbrand.com instead of surveys.yourbrand.com? No, custom domains need to be a subdomain. Your root domain almost certainly already points somewhere else (your website), and technical DNS rules prevent CNAME records on root domains anyway. A subdomain like surveys. or research. is the standard approach and what every other SaaS custom-domain feature uses too.

What happens to my existing surveys? Once your Custom Domain is live, both your existing OpinionX survey URLs and your new custom URLs will work — so any links you've already shared will keep working. New surveys created after setup use the custom domain by default.

Can I use multiple custom domains in one workspace? Not currently — one custom domain per workspace. If you need multiple domains (eg. one per client at an agency), reach out and we'll talk through what's possible.

How much does it cost? Custom Domains are a premium add-on with pricing that depends on your plan and setup. Reach out to your dedicated account manager or book a call and we'll give you an exact quote.
